  1. Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk
  2. Click Registration for Unregistered Person

    • Name (as on CNIC)
    • Address
    • Business type: select Individual
    • Nature of business: IT Services / Freelancing
    • Business activity code: 7400 (Other Professional & Technical Activities)

PSEB registration is free and gives you official recognition as a freelancer/IT exporter.

SBP allows freelancers to receive international payments and retain up to 35% in foreign currency.

Common Questions

Can I work on multiple platforms (Upwork + Fiverr + direct clients)? Yes. All income from all platforms is pooled and declared as export of IT services income. Keep records for each platform separately.

Do I need to register a company? No. Freelancing as an individual under your own name is completely legal and simpler than forming a company. Register as a company only when annual revenue exceeds PKR 10–15 million or you need to hire employees formally.

What if my client pays via crypto? Cryptocurrency payments are in a legal grey area in Pakistan. Convert to fiat (USD) via a regulated exchange before receiving in your bank. Do not declare crypto directly on FBR returns without consulting a tax advisor.

Can I use my regular PKR savings account for freelance income? Technically yes, but a dedicated FCA is strongly recommended. It avoids questions about large PKR inflows, allows you to hold foreign currency, and clearly documents your export income for FBR purposes.
